Impossible Foods
Impossible Foods makes an extremely (almost scarily) realistic version of meatless ground beef. Some say the Impossible Burger’s taste and texture is just like the real thing.
They faced controversy in the past when they sought GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) status from the FDA, which implicitly required them to test on 188 rats, after concerns were raised by the meat industry about the heme protein which makes up the Impossible Burger.
After a drawn out battle between Impossible Foods and the FDA (and the meat industry, which was feeling quite threatened by the upstart company), the company decided they could help far more animals by selling their product with indisputable proof of their product’s safety (as far as the FDA and meat industry were concerned) than they would harm by testing it.
Some vegans don’t agree with this reasoning and boycott Impossible Foods because of it.
(Vegan Rabbit recommends supporting brands that have not elected to test on animals over supporting brands that have.)
